“Honi Soit,“ &c.

“Honi Soit,“ &c. by George Du Maurier. Punch (29 September 1866): 132. “Ann and Sarah see some Fishwomen ‘Clothed that Indelicate that you might have knocked them over with a Feather!’” [The main caption, “Honi Soit,“ &c. the first words of the Order of the Garter's motto — “Shame to him who shame thinks” — provides Du Maurier's view of the well-dressed visitors' assumption thqat the fisherwomen must have low morals because they show their legs. The fisherwomen, meanwhile, remain uncowed.]
