Nurse Gladstone

John Tenniel, artist

Swain, engraver

Punch (25 August 1883)

“The Little Ducky-Wucky! Never will its nana leave it till it can run alone; —never!!”

Mr. Punch comments wryly on the fact that Gladstone, who believed in self-determination for other nations and did not want the empire to expand, finally accepts that England will have to occupy Egypt in order to guard the Suez Canal — the key to safe, efficient sea voyages to India.
