In the earlier decades of Victoria’s reign the Church of England adjusted very slowly to dramatic shifts of population from country to city with the result that some large industrial cities, such as Manchester, had so few churches that ecclesiastical establishment was criticized for abandoning the factory workers and their families. As a response, new churches were in fact built, but by 1880 Fun charges that England had too many. Were there in fact too many, or were many churches underused because Methodists, Baptists, Roman Catholics and others worshipped in their own buildings? — George P. Landow
