In Front of the Stall

In Front of the Stall by Mortimer Menpes. 1901. Watercolor. Source: Japan: A Record in Colour, facing p. 62. This is one of several similar scenes captured by Menpes, as people gather in a small group at a particular stall, probably on the approach to a temple or shrine. They seem to be watching someone demonstrating something here. — Jacqueline Banerjee
