Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Bt ARA (1833-1898)

"The drawing was given to Francis Blanche, who was Burne-Jones's housekeeper; and in whose family it has remained until now. The date of 1863 is early, for Burne-Jones exhibited a watercolour of thew subject at the OWS in 1865 (private collection). The sitter was Augusta Jones (later Johnson), a professional model, described by lady Burne-Jones as a noble looking girl.' The crystal ball remained in Burne-Jones's studio, to be used again for his portrait of Baronne Deslandes in 1896" (Maas catalogue).
