Note 40 to Chapter 2 of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Letters 2: 290. The first edition is undated; the second is dated 1847 and say, "Second Edition" on the cover. Thackeray never kept close tabs on how much publishers owed him, and a letter like this one asking if any money was owed reflected his awareness that he may already have received as advance or loan the amount due.
