"Esquimaux" is the French version of "Eskimo," the former term for the native Inuit of the North-West Territories and Alaska being used by British arctic explorer Samuel Hearn (1745-92) in his journal, A Journey from Prince of Wales' Fort . . . to the Northern Ocean (1795).
