Decorated initial T

he Dickens Fellowship Annual Conference for 2023 will take place in London, at Barnard's Inn, over the period 26-29 July. The Conference theme is Dickens, Law and Disorder.

Dickens Fellowship Conferences traditionally have a programme of invited speakers as well as some opportunities for others to submit proposals for a few lecture spots on one of the Conference days. This year there will be three such slots available, on the afternoon of Thursday 27th July, each for a half-hour paper (as it is for the invited speakers). If you are interested in offering a paper, please send us a short proposal of up to 250 words and a CV.

Please note that the Dickens Fellowship is a mix of academic and lay members, and papers should be pitched (in content and delivery) to appeal to this mixed audience.

To give some guidance to your choice of topic, please be aware of the titles of talks already accepted for inclusion in the Conference programme:

"Dickens, Disorder, and the Imagination"; "Thoughts on the Punishment of Death": "Dickens and Basil Montagu""; "'This ain't the shop for justice,' Crime and Policing in Dickens's London"; "The Mannings"; "'A Special Correspondent for Posterity': Dickens, journalism, and public executions"; "Divorce and the Dickenses"; "The Marshalsea Prison"; "Dickens and the law of censorship""; "Dickens and The Terrific Register"; "Spy. Agent provocateur. A Dickens detective?"; "On Duty with the Conductor Dickens Watches the Detectives."

Proposals and accompanying CVs should reach the following by Friday 31st March 2023:

Emily Bell: E.J.L.Bell@leeds.ac.uk

Malcolm Andrews: m.y.andrews@kent.ac.uk

Please note: you must be a registered member of the Dickens Fellowship by the time of the conference in order to participate. You can find details about membership here: https://www.dickensfellowship.org/index.php/membership/central-fellowship. For accepted papers, travelling expenses within the UK will be reimbursed, and the conference fee for the Thursday will be waived.

We will acknowledge receipt, and should be able to let the chosen speakers know by Friday 28th April. If you have not heard any result from us by that date, it means your proposal has not been successful.
