W. R. Tymms

Designed by Florence Lacomb and chromolithographed by W R Tymms

9½ x 7½ inches

Florence Lacomb,Indian Fables.

This is a typical page from Lacomb’s book. The artist was only 18 years of age when she did the illuminations; she also translated the verse. The drawing is sometimes stilted and reflects her inexperience. Nevertheless, Tymms converts the original material into another piece of visual splendour, with floral borders enclosing the text and a narrative illustration in the form of a lunette. The lunette was printed on a separate piece of paper and applied by hand.
