The Burnt Offering

The Burnt Offering

Simeon Solomon

Wood engraving by the Dalziels [1862].

6¼ x 4¾ inches

Alex Foley, Art Pictures from the Old Testament, p.87.

Leviticus, vi: 8–13. The illustration depicts Aaron as he makes his offering at the high altar. As in the other designs, the focus is on the moment of doing – so giving the events an intense immediacy. Psychological drama, combined with anecdotal detail and decorative patterns are central elements in Solomon’s Pre-Raphaelite treatment of his subject.
