The Infant Moses

The Infant Moses

Simeon Solomon

Wood engraving by the Dalziels [1862].

Alex Foley, Art Pictures from the Old Testament, p.55.

Exodus, ii: 3. A characteristically tender scene which shows Moses in his mother’s arms, with his sister Miriam looking on. The delicate touching of hands conveys the mother’s and sister’s love, but the faces are anxious and unsure. Solomon’s image mediates between the antiquarian and the decorative, fusing the two tendencies of Pre-Raphaelite art by combining deep emotion with the careful observation of the natural world.
