Glen Oona

J. W. North

1867

Wood engraving by the Dalziels

6½ x 5 inches

Illustration for Wayside Posies, p.45.

Though nominally illustrating a poem reminiscing on memories of childhood, North adds a social commentary in the form of the homeless workers lying exhausted by the side of the road – an extra-textual detail that subverts the poem's sentimentality. This technique is typical of his approach to illustration.
