The Death of the "Great Mel"

Charles Keene

Wood engraving by Joseph Swain

Hammerton, facing p. 212

Even in death the flamboyant father of the family somehow retains his presence. J. A. Hammerton highly commends this illustration for George Meredith’s Evan Harrington (first published in Once a Week, February-October 1860) for its "quiet dignity and strength," its "carefully studied detail," and its "balanced composition" (376).
