Richard Doyle

Wood engraving by an unknown engraver [probably Joseph Swain]

3 x 2 inches

W. M. Thackeray,The Newcomes, I, 247.

Money is symbolized in various ways in the initial letters - and is represented here in the form of the debt-ogre which takes Honeyman away to prison. The fairy-tale imagery is child-like, but ironically comments on adult affairs.
