Crocodile

Crocodiile

Richard Doyle

Wood engraving by an unknown engraver [probably Joseph Swain]

3 x 2 inches

W. M. Thackeray,The Newcomes, II, 161.

This figure is entirely an invention of the artist's and is used here to make a metaphorical comment on Lady Kew's death - symbolizing the mourners' fake tears by showing crocodile tears being shed. The addition of funerary hat and cloak adds to the droll, and very revealing humour.
