Display Cabinet

Designer: Owen Jones, 1809-1874

Manufacturer: Jackson & Graham

1867

Veneered in ebony with ivory inlays

Provenance: Alfred Morrison, made for Fonthill, Wiltshire.

Alfred Morrison added a room to Fonthill to house his extensive collection of Chinese porcelain and enamels, which included many of the finest objects from the Summer Palace at Pekin. This cabinet must have formed a semicircular, apsidal bay in the room; the shallowness of the shelving suggests that it was designed specifically for the display of plates. Each of the eight doors in the lower part of the cabinet incorporates the monogram AM (Alfred Morrison) in the elaborate design in the ivory inlay.
