Another Art Nouveau design, made up of a swirling arabesque in the form of a simplified, abstracted vine-leaf; parrots, poised to eat the grapes, add a note of humour and guileless celebration. The cover may have been designed the book’s illustrator, Hugh Thomson, who created a number of impressive liveries for Macmillan.
