Binding by Walter Crane. 7½ x 7 inches; engraved and printed in colour by Edmund Evans. Another example of Crane’s capacity to unite pattern-making with comic imagery. These books have become increasingly rare and the poor copy illustrated here is a typical example of the damage done by over-enthusiastic readers in the nursery; teeth marks can be found on the rear board and edges of this pored-over, much-loved copy.
