This part of the building would originally have housed the Students' Reading Room below, and the central hall of the Hunterian Museum above (see "University of Glasgow, Old and New"). It is sometimes referred to as "the apse of the Hunterian" (e.g., Williamson et al. 341). Behind it lies Bute Hall between the East and West quadrangles of the university building.
